MMS Standards Harmonization For information and discussion May 12, 2003 Alan Stebbens Milt Roselinsky
MMS Harmonization Goals to ensure interoperability: • Align MMS standardization efforts in 3GPP and 3GPP2 • Identify a process to: • maintain MMS standards • avoid divergence • Continue to identify & resolve interworking issues
Goal 1: Align MMS Standards Diverging standards create interoperability issues • Current standards have very similar content • are organized differently: • 3GPP: Stage 2 & 3 in one document • 3GPP2: Stage 2 and several Stage 3’s in separate documents
Proposed Solution to goal 1 Re-organize TS 23.140: • Break out stage 3 elements For example: • 23.140-1 – MMS Stage 2 Service Description • 23.140-2 – MMS MM3 Stage 3 Internet interworking • 23.140-3 – MMS MM4 Stage 3 Operator interworking • 23.140-4 – MMS MM7 Stage 3 VASP Interworking Advantages: • Easier to understand • Involve more companies as contributors and editors • Document maintenance is easier • Easier to harmonize with 3GPP or delegate to OMA
Goal 2: MMS Standards Maintenance Maintain alignment of: • MMS end-to-end service features: • MM3 – Internet interworking • MM4 – Carrier interworking • MM7 – VASP interworking Solution: • Liaison closely in order to track changes in Requirements and Functions (Stages 1 and 2) • Delegate development and maintenance of Technical Realizations (stage 3 elements) • Example: OMA MMS for MM1 • Delivery reports • Read-reply reports • Reply charging • Addressing (E.164, Email, Short-codes) • Address hiding • Mandatory codecs
Goal 3: Continue To Identify & Resolve Issues • Today’s meeting is a good, important start • Share output of joint meetings with: • OMA MMSG • 3GPP SA1 and T2 • 3GPP2 TSG-X PSN • Schedule future meetings • At least one per year • Otherwise as necessary • Communication is key to success
