  1. INDOOR AIR QUALITY ASSESSMENT ON TUBE PLATFORM June 9-112005Budapest, Hungary National Institute of Environmental Health Gyáli u. 2-6. Budapest, Hungary É. VASKÖVI, T. BEREGSZÁSZI, M. ENDRŐDY, M. CSÍK, G. KOVÁCS, G. TÖRÖK

  2. CHOICE of TOPIC

  3. OBJECTIVE To quantify the levels of commuter’s exposure in metro station

  4. TOOLS • Making measurements to characterise the indoor air pollution in metro station DS SS

  5. SAMPLING DESIGN • Pollutants:TSP, PM10, PM2,5 NO2, benzene • Period: 21Nov - 05 Dec 2003 • Sites: 2 Budapest metro stationplatforms • Control site: ground above(NO2, benzene) close to the same road (PM fractioned) • Time/frequency: TSP: 3*1 hr/ 5days (8.30-11:30) PM10, PM2,5: 24 hrs/ 5days NO2, benzene: 1 week

  6. SAMPLERS • TSP Hi-Vol, v= 80 m3/hr • PM10, PM2,5 Low-Vol, v=0,6m3/hr • NO2 diffusive, Palmes • C6H6diffusive, Radiello

  7. ANALYSIS • TSP gravimetry • PM10, PM2,5 gravimetry • NO2 spectrophotometry • C6H6 GC/FID

  8. FURTHER ANALYSIS PM10, PM2,5 • Absorption coefficient (Reflectometry) • Elemental composition (SEM) • Morphology (SEM) • Radioactivity (γ-spektrometry) • Mutagenity (Ames test) (TSP) (PM10)

  9. LV outdoor LV outdoor RESULTS 1-hour levels TSP Nagyvárad sqr Klinikák TSPInd>out LV

  10. RESULTS 3-hour means TSP TSP No significant differences

  11. RESULTS Variation in time and space PM10 PM2,5 • PM10> PM2,5 • Differencies in space on • PM10 ,PM2,5 • No tendency

  12. RESULTS 5-day means PM10 PM2,5 • PM10 • Ind>>outd • PM2,5 • Ind > outd

  13. RESULTS Elemental composition • Dominant • Fe • (30%) Morphology Morphology Morphology

  14. RESULTS Elemental composition • Dominant • C • (50%) Morphology

  15. RESULTS Absorption coefficient Ind>outd

  16. Fe: 33%O : 25%C: 27% Fe: 30%O : 24%C: 28% RESULTS Shape and composition PM10 Particles comprised Fe amorphous and needle forms as well Fe: 30% O : 24% C: 28% Fe: 30% O : 24% C: 28%

  17. RESULTS Radioactivity < DL

  18. RESULTS Radioactivity < DL

  19. RESULTS Mutagenity Dose-response relationship TSP • moderate mutagenic activity • responses1,47(1,19) to 4,42(3,31) revertants/ m3 assessed by Tokiwa

  20. M M RESULTS NO2 and C6H6 pollution Nagyvárad sqr Klinikák • NO2 • Ind<outd • C6H6 • Ind < outd

  21. CONCLUSION • Low level indoor exposure • Indoor pollution is affected by outdoor pollution • Indoor pollution is independent from the depht of station • Underground microenvironment considered as a source of dust comprised Fe exposure

  22. 1896 2003 FINALCONCLUSION We suppose that the exposure associated with commuting underground is not a risk for public

  23. SUGGESTION • Regural cleaning • Air cleanig • Further measurements

  24. Thank you for your attention

  25. CONCLUSION Exposure • POLLUTION Indoor>outdoor (PM) Indoor>outdoor (Fe) Indoor<outdoor (NO2, C6H6) • TIME Indoor (ave. 15 min) <<< outdoor (more hrs) Indoor exp < ambient exp
