  3. Types of Paint Latex • Water based • Available in: • Matte • Gloss • Textured finishes • Used for interior and exterior surfaces Alkyd • Oil based • Available in • Matte • Gloss • Textured finishes • Used for interior and exterior surfaces

  4. Water Based (latex) Advantages • Easy to apply with roller • Dries quickly • Uneven painting less noticable • Easy clean up with water Disadvantages • Hiding power less than that of oil based

  5. Oil Based Paint (Alkyd) Advantages • Easy to scrub • Great for bathrooms and kitchens Disadvantages • Require a solvent thinner • Take longer to dry • Give off strong fumes • Painting equipment harder to clean

  6. Three types of paint finishes • High-gloss • Semi-gloss • Flat

  7. High-gloss finish • Easy to clean • Used on decorative walls where a lacquered look is desired • Durable • Attractive on woodwork

  8. Semi-gloss finish • Use on walls and woodwork • Clean easily • Resist stains

  9. Flat Finish(velvet) • Porous and do not resist stains well • Popular due to soft wall finish • Not recommended for woodwork

  10. Textured paints • Add dimension to color • Apply with brush, roller, sponge, broom or sprayer • Work well to hide wall imperfections • Difficult to change or repaint the surface

Other Surface Finishes • Plaster/Stucco-like surface: Create texture • Fresco: A thin coat plaster with integral color than can be worked into a hard, textured surface. • Paint Techniques: May require multiple steps to acquire finish. Examples include striate, linen-look, sponge or ragging, faux finishes. • Stencils: Allow for repetition that resembles printed patterns on wallpaper.
