2. Hi my name is Dmitri Mendeleev and this is my castle. I have 18 rooms that are made from one of the elements of the periodic table of elements.

3. My buddy Einstein will accompany you on your journey, giving you clues to help you determine which room you are in. Each time you identify an element you will be transported to the next room on the tour. You will be magically transported inside the 18 room castle. You do not know where in the castle you have been transported. Only after you have identified each element, will you be able to exit Dmitri’s castle.

4. 1! 1 jHekjreljrk The room has been constructed of a strong, lightweight, corrosion-resistant metal used in making airplanes, buildings, pots , and pans. This element is composed of 13 protons. It is the most abundant metal in the Earth’s crust. Hi , I am your guide through the castle. You must help me out though. I can’t seem to remember what element this room is made from. I do have some clues and a periodic table to help us out. Use the following clues and your periodic table to determine the element. When you determine the element write your answer on your handout . Here we go!! When you have guessed the element go to the next room.

5. 1! 2 This element is a non-metal gas that makes up 20% of our air. It has 8 protons and 6 electrons on its outer energy level. What element is this room made with? Now we find ourselves in a room of a clear life-giving gas.

6. 1! 3 You have entered a room of green-yellow gas which immediately begins to burn your eyes and throat. You need a gas mask on to be in this room!! This element is used in bleach and swimming pool chemicals. It is a non-metal and is also found in table salt. It also has 17 electrons. What element is this room made of?

7. 1! 4 You now find yourself surrounded by shiny yellow crystals. This element has 3 energy levels and has 6 electrons on its outer energy level. (Hint: count the total electrons) What element is this room made of?

8. 1! 5 This room is made of one of the simplest atoms on the table. It has 2 neutrons and two electrons. What element is this room made of? This room has a clear gas which makes your voice sound high-pitched and squeaky, like Mickey Mouse.

9. 1! 6 This room is made of a silver-gray metallic solid with 3 protons. It is also a member of the hydrogen family. It is very soft and will explode if it comes in contact with water. What element is this room made of?

10. 1! 7 This element occurs in teeth and bones as calcium phosphate and it has 16 neutrons. This element has 5 valence electrons. What element is this room made of? This room has bright white, waxy walls. When you turn off the lights the entire room glows in the dark.

11. 1! 8 You are now in a room made of a shiny, silver metal. This element appears here in it’s pure form. It is often used in electrical circuits and computer parts. It has 3 energy levels and 4 electrons in the outer energy level. It and oxygen are the 2 elements that make up sand. (Hint: count the total electrons) What element is this room made of?

12. 1! 9 This room is composed of a gas that has no color, taste or odor. An atom of this element has 2 electrons on its first energy level and 5 electrons on its 2nd energy level. (Hint: Count the total electrons This element makes up 80% of our air and can be used to make laughing gas. What element is this room made of?

13. 1! 10 This room is made of a shiny, soft, white solid at room temperature. This element is VERY reactive and when combined with chlorine it forms table salt. It has 12 neutrons and 1 valence electron. What element is this room made from?

14. 1! 11 This room has a thick colorless gas at room temperature. It is used to fill light bulbs. This is a totally non-reactive element and is also a Noble Gas. It has 18 electrons. What element is this room made of?

15. 1! 12 This room you enter is made of a solid substance. This element is the basic unit for all living things. Without it , jewelers would go broke, gas stations would go out of business and every breath you take would be incomplete. This element has 6 protons, 6 electrons, and 6 neutrons. What element is this room made of?

16. 1! 13 It is a member of the Helium family and Las Vegas wouldn’t be the same without it. It has same number of energy levels as Boron does. What element is this room made of? This room is filled with a gas. This gas gives off a brilliant orange-red light when electricity is passed through it.

17. 1! 14 This room is made of a light gray metal. It is so strong, hard and elastic that it is added to other metals to make them stronger. This element has 2 electrons on its 2nd energy level. What element is this room made of?

18. 1! 15 The atoms of this element have 2 energy levels with 3 electrons on the last energy level. What element is this room made of? This room is made of a hard, black, shiny material and then it suddenly changes into a brown powder

19. 1! 16 It is also the head of its family, it is very reactive and contains 10 neutrons. What element is this room made of? This room is made of a green-yellow gas. When the element combines with sodium, it can help reduce tooth decay.

20. 1! 17 This element is widely used in the aerospace industry. This element is very reactive and is period 3 of the table. It is the same family as Beryllium What element is this room made of?
