BASIC NOTE CARD RULES • Use a 3x5 card for EACH note. • Record the source number. • Indicate the type of card (summary, quote, paraphrase, statistic, own idea.) • Record the page number.
QUOTE CARD • Word-for-word from the source • Use quotation marks. • Same punctuation • Used to enhance or back-up your point • Indicate speaker if NOT the person who wrote the article, etc.
PARAPHRASE CARD • Same information in YOUR OWN WORDS • About same length as original • Used when you need specific details/opinions (but not a quote)
SUMMARY CARD • Main idea in your own words • Shorter than the original - usually much shorter • Used to remember a general idea
STATISTIC CARD • Statistic only OWN IDEA CARD • Your own thought • Something you may need to remember • Notes to yourself - Do not cite!
