Overview of Office The Multicultural Academic Services (MAS) office offers all of the following to students: The PRODUCE Programis designed to recruit, retain, and graduate underrepresented students in one of theScience Technology, Engineering, orMath (STEM) disciplines at UNCC. *PRODUCE is part of the NC Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (NC-LSAMP) & funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.. The B3 Programis designed to increase the retention & graduation rates of black males. B3 helps black and other minority males become graduates with high academic achievement and preparedness for post-college life. SAFEcombines academic support with personal development programming to encourage academic achievement, positive self-concept, & increased personal growth that aid in the retention & graduation of participants. *Intended for underrepresented first year students but opened to all students. UTOP Introduction The UTOP program began in 1986 to facilitate the minority student’s transition from high school to college. UTOP involves incoming UNC Charlotte freshman in a structured collegiate experience, that builds upon the scholastic abilities of the students through college courses and contact with University academic support services during the summer. Academic advising and monitoring continue throughout the student’s career at UNC Charlotte. UTOP offers invitations to a limited number of students. Preference is given to students who live in small towns, rural areas and inner city communities and typically have had limited access to academic support services in the public schools. UTOP Benefits UTOP students learn about the many resources available to University students and become some of the best-informed freshman on the UNC Charlotte Campus. Deans, professors, and student counselors share their insights on the “how to” of University life, from using the library to keeping track of degree requirements. UTOP students are introduced to: Registrar’s Office, Atkins Library, Health Center and Sports Medicine Clinic, University Career Center, Student Employment office, Counseling Center, Financial Aid Office. UTOP students are also exposed to other campus opportunities that focus on academic success and personal development like: Cooperative Education/Internships, Honors and Scholars Programs, Interdisciplinary Studies, Study Abroad, National Student Exchange Program, ROTC (Air Force and Army), and Leadership Development Programs. UTOP participants become aware of opportunities for involvement in student government, clubs and organizations, intramural sports and athletic programs. UTOP Courses Participants enroll in three courses from the standard University curriculum- two English courses (freshman composition and supplemental English) and a Learning to Learn ™ freshman seminar course that helps the student to develop natural thinking skills which improve academic, personal, and social skills, or a liberal studies course that meets a general education requirement. UTOP students receive seven credit hours toward graduation upon completion of the summer program. UTOP Learning Community The Office of Multicultural Academic Services offers and supports the UTOP Learning Community for the participants of the Summer program. This initiative is a one-year program that is designed to have students engaged in coursework and activities that will continue to build on the skills learned during their summer UTOP program. Participants continue to enroll in select classes together and will share a common living/learning environment during the fall and spring semesters. To participate in the UTOP Learning Community, the student must sign up through the Housing and Residence Life website. Thirty slots are available for the UTOP Learning Community. Financial Aid All Financial Aid offered for UTOP is need-based and for NC residents. Need is determined by results by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) www.fafsa.gov Submitted FASFA is processed within 14 business days Students who are eligible will be awarded by the first day of the UTOP Program. Eligible students will also be considered for additional financial aid for the academic-year. Cost of UTOP Program: In State Student Out of State Student • ~$1,921 Tuition (7 Cr. UTOP Applications Online registration for the UTOP program is available through your 49er account under “Student Services”. Navigate to Banner Self Service, then click on the “Student Services/Student Accounts tab. The last link will be the UTOP Application. Be sure you complete the full application . At the end you will be given the opportunity to either accept or decline the application. Once you accept you will be prompted to print the application and mail the Activity Fee. Please Note: Your application is not fully completed until we receive the Activity Fee securing your placement in the 2013 UTOP summer program.
