Storage Purpose – Live centers are used when a shafts length to diameter ratio is greater than 3:1 in lathe operations. This gives the shaft a second support and minimizes deflection and eccentricity. Location – Live centers should be located in your stations drawer see photo Safety – Live centers should be tightened to work piece while the lathe is running. Also as always keep fingers and loose clothing free of moving parts. • Tips – • The piece to be supported should be center drilled with an appropriate 60 degree center drill. • The live center’s shaft should be inserted as far as possible. This will ensure that the end of the live center will be stable as well. Also, lock the tailstock to the rails and use the spinning handle as the motion of the live center. • With your part in the chuck, start the lathe and slowly insert the live center in the center drill hole. Apply moderate force until the live center is approximately rotating at the same speed as the part • Clean up – • To take live center out of tailstock, turn wheel so that the jaws are fully retracted, remove from tailstock, wipe clean, and replace in drawer where found. • Purchase – • To purchase, call MSC or see MSC Direct > < Live Centers >> << Setup 1 2 3
