  3. 2. The reasons people begin using drugs are similar to the reasons they begin to drink or smoke. What are these reasons? • Experiment • Escape depression / boredom • Enjoyment of risky behavior • Belief that drugs solve personal problems • Peer pressure • Media glamorizing drug use

  4. 3. While there are many different illegal drugs, all illegal drugs have 3 things in common.What are these 3 things? • Affects function of the brain • Dangerous to health • Result in drug dependence and addiction

  10. WHAT IS MARIJUANA? Marijuanais a word used to describe the dried flowers, seeds, and leaves of the Indian hemp plant. Cannabis describes any of the different drugs that come from Indian hemp, including marijuana and hashish. Hashish is a related form of the drug, made from resins of the Indian hemp plant. Regardless of the name, this drug is an hallucinogen – a substance which distorts how the mind perceives the world you live in. The chemical in cannabis that creates this distortion is known as THC. The cannabis plant, from which marijuana is derived, has over 400 different chemicals.

SNIFFING Users may inhale the chemical vapors directly from open containers Inhalants refers to the vapors from toxic substances which are inhaled to reach a quick high The chemicals are quickly absorbed through the lungs into the bloodstream and quickly reach the brain and other organs There are more than 1,000 household products that could be used as inhalants Produce effects similar to anesthetics, which slow down the body’s functions The user experiences an initial high and loss of inhibitions, then drowsiness, lightheadedness, and agitation Because they reach the brain with a faster speed and force than other substances, they can cause irreversible physical and mental damages. WHAT IS COCAINE? • The word cocaine refers to the drug in a powder or crystal form. • The powder form is usually mixed with corn starch, talcum, powder, sugar or any other drugs such as procaine (a local anesthetic) or amphetamines • Extracted from cocoa leaves • Cocaine was originally developed as a painkiller • Cocaine is most often sniffed with the powder absorbed into the bloodstream through the nasal tissues. • It can also be ingested or rubbed into the gums • To more rapidly absorb the drug into the body, abusers inject it, but this substantially increases the risk of overdose.
