British Imperialism in India By Junwoo Ha Angie Jo Grace Cho
cause • Mughal empire was collapsing • Europeans took advantage of the chaos (East India Company) • Provided raw materials for British during industrial revolution • British was able to produce tea, indigo, coffee and cotton • Had 300 people( good market for British made goods)
course • 1757 – The British fought the Indian force at the Battle of Plassey • Indirect and direct rule • The east India company ruled India = the army was the company’s sepoys lead by British officers • British set up restrictions that prevented the Indian economy from operating on its own • British forced India to provide raw materials and buy British goods • British established railroad network
consequence • The company controlled most of Southern India ( Bangladesh and all the territory along the Ganges River in the north) • India’s own hand made cloth industry was put out of business • Pros = third largest railroad network • = allowed India to have modern, unity, etc • = brought in telephone, canals, roads, etc • = public health improved and schools • = British troops stopped local fighting • Neg. = reducted food production – famine • = the British were racists, killed India traditional way of living
SepoyRevellion( 1857-) • The Indian soldiers were Muslims and Hindus • They never ate meat (pork, beef) • The new British gun had a seals of meat, to use it, they had to bite it off • The soldiers rebelled and refused to do it • The British and the sepoy fought, the sepoys captured the big city of Delhi • It took more than a year for the Company to regain control of the country again
