British Imperialism in India • The British East India company controlled India • They got raw materials and a huge potential market for their products • They controlled India by using an army made up of sepoys. or Indian soldiers
The Sepoy Mutiny • The sepoys rebelled against the British due to religious conflicts • Rumors began to circulate that the cartridges the sepoys were using for their rifles were greased with beef and pork fat • This greatly offended many of the Indian soldiers
The Sepoy Mutiny • Most Indians were either Hindu or Muslim, each group had a problem with the cartridges • Hindus view cows as sacred animals and Muslims do not eat pork • The soldiers had to bite off the ends of the cartridges to use them
The Sepoy Mutiny • The British commanders punished the soldiers who refused to use the cartridges • The following day the soldiers rebelled • The British government eventually took control of the country to make sure it was stable
