  1. Cookin’ Up a Paragraph Getting ready to ‘serve up’ the perfect paragraph…

  2. The Paragraph • Each paragraph should contain an opening sentence. This sentence can also be called the ‘main idea’ as it gives the reader an idea of what will be discussed in the paragraph.

  3. Following the opening sentence, the paragraph should also contain 3 details that support or add to the main idea.

  4. Your 3 details are the body of your paragraph. They give the reader a better understanding of your main idea/opening sentence. 3 details body

  5. Transitions • Using transition words will help your sentences flow from one to the next. • EXAMPLE: Firstly, I love how the chocolate melts on the tip of my tongue and causing me to crave more. Additionally, I’ve found that the bitter taste of dark chocolate can be just as satisfying as the sweetness of a milk chocolate treat.

  6. To conclude (end) your paragraph, add a closing sentence that ties everything together. • EXAMPLE: Although some would say that chocolate is not very healthy, I can’t resist explosion that happen in my mouth every time I eat it.

  7. Think of a Hamburger… Topic Sentence/Main Idea: Detail #1 Detail #2 Detail #3 Closing Sentence

  8. Find it! Look for the main idea (opening sentence),3 details and closing sentence in this paragraph. As a child I developed a love for the Disney character Mickey Mouse. I’ve always found the character to be a good role model and not to mention, very cute. Firstly, I admire the way Mickey stresses the importance of friendship and being there when a friend is in need. Mickey and his friends are also quite funny and like to play silly little tricks on each other. Finally, I am completely enamoured with Mickey Mouse because he is always trying new things and encourages others to do the same. That has inspired me to go out and make new friends and experience different cultres. Even though you may find it odd that a grown woman loves Mickey Mouse, the mouse has some great ‘qualities’ that others can strive for.

  9. NOTE: To help find the important parts of our burger I’ve underlined the opening and closing sentences in RED andhighlighted any transition words. You will be doing the same thing in certain written pieces assigned. Have I missed anything? • As a child I developed a love for the Disney character Mickey Mouse.
