The Drive Shed The Drive Shed is a high end recording studio, located in North York. Some of its features are: A $70,000 grand piano, a large recording space with an isolation booth, a 32 channel Icon soundboard, and two Lesley amplifiers. The Drive Shed is a privately owned freelance recording studio, but despite having no partnership with a record label, continues to have daily clients. Many consider The Drive shed one of Toronto’s best recording studios.
John Bailey The owner of the drive shed is John Bailey. He has been working in the music industry for almost 20 years, and has adapted to every technological advance throughout the years. His knowledge of production and recording is seemingly endless, and every time I have a conversation with him, I learn something new. Due to his colossal devotion to his work, he is often exhausted and stressed. However, this does not stop him from paying attention to every detail in his work.
My Responsibilities • Make coffee and tidy studio before client arrives. • Assist with setup/tear down of equipment. • Supervise recording sessions (occasionally.) • Help with studio tasks: • Changing speakers • Printing sheet music for clients • Testing Equipment
PPLP Expectations Personal Knowledge and Management Skills Demonstrator: To understand skills that contribute to success in adult life and employment. The way I met this expectation at my placement was by constantly being in the presence of adults and important clients, causing me to be respectful and helpful when needed, and to be quiet and out of the way otherwise.
PPLP Expectations Interpersonal Knowledge and Skills Demonstrator: To exhibit interpersonal skills required for communication in the workplace. The way I met this expectation at my placement was by interacting with many professional musicians and producers. Through this, I learned standard etiquette, common slang and the basic dynamics between a client and engineer.
PPLP Expectations Exploration of Opportunities Demonstrator: To learn the possible career paths available to me, and learn the requirements for those paths. The way I met this expectation at my placement was by learning about the pros and cons of being a recording engineer from John, and asking musicians recording at the studio about their path to get to be a successful musician.
PPLP Expectations Preparation for Transition and Change Demonstrator: To learn how to adapt to changes and obstacles, and strategize ways to overcome them. The way I met this expectation at my placement was by watching John solve myriad computer problems without any sort of tech support. With his knowledge of the computer system, he knew how to solve every problem he came across.
Reflections Throughout this semester, I have gained so much knowledge of what it’s really like to work in a recording studio. From learning to use equipment to learning how to interact with clients, my understanding of the studio has expanded tremendously. Unfortunately, John spent many days this spring doing mixing and editing, which is a process done by one person on a computer. Of course, I learned a lot from watching him do this, but didn’t participate much. Because of my knowledge gained from watching John work, I will soon be buying a laptop equipped with everything I need to make my own recordings at home, and John will always be available to help me with obstacles along the way.
Reflections (cont’d) My four most valueble experiences while at the studio were observing the recording sessions done by several fantastic bands including players such as: Daphnus Prius, Justin Abboden, Rick Gratton and Don Breithaupt. I also had the opportunity to supervise a session over a weekend while John was away on business.
Education/Training There are several schools that specialize in music production, including Fanshawe College in Toronto. I intend to go to Humber Colledge to take their contemporary music program, where I can eventually either choose a recording stream or a performing stream. My placement at The Drive Shed confirmed that I want to invest my time in a career in music, whether I become an engineer or a performer.
