Creating Utopia: A return to eden or babel? Considering the implications of building a perfect society without God.
Session 9 Utopia: Transhumanism (Part 2) G.R.I.N. Technologies
The framework of this study was laid out by Dr. Heiser in a presentation given at the 2013 “Future Congress” Conference. The title of the presentation was: “Thinking Theologically About the Utopian Impulse as a Perversion of the Judeo-Christian Worldview” It can be viewed on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/yl4wR-EW00Y

The Argument • In order to create a new utopian society a fundamentally new type of human will be required. • Transhumanism is an attempt to create a new form of humanity. • Transhumanism promises a perfected body, free from the fallen world. Essentially a technological version of a resurrected body. • G.R.I.N. technologies represent the primary pathways for furthering transhumanism’s vision of utopia.
–Jeremiah 10:23 Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.
–Friedrich Nietzsche The most common lie is that which one lies to himself; lying to others is relatively an exception.
In the quest for a perfect human society, man envisions himself as a god over the Utopia he has yet to create.
G.R.I.N. Technologies • Genetics • Robotics • Artificial Intelligence • Nanotechnology
G.R.I.N. Technologies • Genetics • Designer Babies • Germ Line Engineering • Synthetic Biology
G.R.I.N. Technologies • Designer Babies • Using current fertility technology combined with existing and upcoming genetic technology to create a better human. • We will likely feel obligated to remove genetic defects and abnormalities. • We will be tempted to fashion our children in the way we believe will be most advantageous for them. • We will create our children to be the people we always wanted to be, we will use them to meet our needs and desires.

G.R.I.N. Technologies • Germ Line Manipulation • Future generations can’t give their consent (Dr. Francis Collins). • There will likely be unintended consequences to the individual’s genetic line. • This technology, if misused, could be used to create a genetically segmented society. • In an idealists hands, it may be easier to create a class of idiot serfs who don’t know they are oppressed, that to create a society of super-men.
G.R.I.N. Technologies • Synthetic Biology • Integrating completely new and unique genetic sequences will have unintended consequences. • Some impacts will be contained within an individual others may interact and spread into the environment. • Long-term effects may not be seen until it is far too late to contain it. • Creation of completely new organisms will likely have a devastating impact on any ecosystem it is introduced into. • If weaponized, synthetic biology has the potential to create anything from a virus that attacks just one person to a organism that kills everything it comes in contact with.

G.R.I.N. Technologies • Robotics • The radical pace of advancement. • The Brain Computer Interface • Robotics and Love
G.R.I.N. Technologies • The radical pace of advancement. • The word robot was coined by Karel Capek in 1920. • In less that 100 years we have went from an idea of a mechanized servant to an economy dependent on modern robotics. • Robotics, like many other technologies, has enjoyed exponential growth. • Many economists consider advancements in robotics one of the greatest threats to the global economy.

G.R.I.N. Technologies • The Brain Computer Interface (BCI) • Primarily used today for controlling prosthetic limbs. • Having a BCI installed makes a person a cyborg. • Today’s BCIs allow for us to get a granular view of brain activity. • Future BCIs would allow for much more refined readings. • Future BCIs are envisioned as allowing two way communication.
G.R.I.N. Technologies • Robotics and “Love” • Advanced robotics is quickly merging with human-like “love doll” and A.I. technology to create companions. • The industry is huge, well funded, and is moving forward at an astounding pace. • Companions are marketed as being for the lonely, those who need assistance, or personalized care. • In reality, both manufacturers and customers are focused on creating sex robots. • The personal and social impact may be devastating.

G.R.I.N. Technologies • Artificial Intelligence • AI as a pathway to security. • Next Generation Hardware • Next Generation Software • The Technological Singularity
G.R.I.N. Technologies • A.I. as a pathway to security. • Utopia must have security to survive. • A.I. coupled with other technologies becomes a powerful tool to be able to provide security at superhuman speed and volume. • Environmental Sensors • Facial Recognition • Data Mining

G.R.I.N. Technologies • Next Generation Hardware • Neuromorphic Computing • Intel’s LOIHI Neuromorphic Processor • Quantum Computing • Intel’s 49 Qubit Processor (Prototype) • D-Wave Quantum Computers (Commercially Available)
G.R.I.N. Technologies • Next Generation Software • Google’s DeepMind Project • Deep Neural Networks • General Purpose A.I. and Machine Learning • AlphaGO • The AlphaGo A.I. defeated Go champion Lee Sedol. • This stunned the A.I. world and brought the subject front and center in the technology world.
G.R.I.N. Technologies • The Technological Singularity • What happens when the information being created outstrips humanity’s collective ability to manage it? • What happens when A.I. becomes smarter than its human creators? • What happens when A.I. begins to design next generation A.I. that exponentially surpass human cognitive abilities. • Futurists predict everything from bliss to annihilation.

G.R.I.N. Technologies • Nanotechnology • Nano-medicine • Molecular Assembler • Programmable Matter
G.R.I.N. Technologies • Nano-medicine • Nanotechnology is used today in “lab-on-a-chip” applications to rapidly test chemicals and body fluids. • Nanoshells are being tested for use in diagnosing and treating cancer. • Nanoparticles would be used to deliver medicine directly to the affected area of the body instead of saturating the body with drugs. • Nanoparticulate contrasting agents could be used for ultra-high resolution imaging. • Nano-electronic devices may be used in tissue engineering. • Nano-electonics may be used as a “wetware” interface between biological tissue and technological hardware.
G.R.I.N. Technologies • Molecular Assembler (nanosythesis) • Assembles matter at the molecular level. • Create novel items that cannot be generated using typical raw materials. • Create materials with precision and purity not possible in nature. • Might allow for the entire assembly process to occur on the nano-scale and be functionally invisible to humans.
G.R.I.N. Technologies • Programmable Matter (claytronics) • Matter that exists in a primary or amorphous state until instructed to take a specific secondary shape. • Would appear to us like magic.

Transhumanism will lead to confusion and human suffering. It denies God as the creator of man. Man is left with the job of being his own creator. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing. –C.S. Lewis
Summary • The utopian sees technology as a way to enable the creation of their Utopia. • Again, it becomes obvious they see mankind and his technology as fundamentally good. • It is assumed that applying technology to any issue will somehow lead to a positive result for humanity. • God will replace our bodies with perfect bodies. They won’t be biological or technological. They will be a spiritual body and free from the fallenness of this current world.
–1 Corinthians 15:42-44 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.
