Whole Number Estimation Estimates are close to the exact answer but are usually easier and faster to find. The leading digit of a whole number is the first digit at the left. Compatible numbers are close to the numbers in the problem, and they can help make the calculation easier. An estimate that is less than the exact answer is an underestimate. An estimate that is greater than the exact answer is an overestimate. Rules for Estimating a ... 1. sum or difference - round both numbers to the same place value. 2. product - round each number to its leading digit. 3. quotient - use compatible numbers.
Examples - Estimate each sum, difference, product or quotient: 1. 5,439 + 7,516 ; thousands 2. 62,167 - 47,511; ten-thousands Examples: 3. 27 + 176 4. 804 - 623 5. 9 x 27 6. 12 x 79
