AFOSR PARTNERING IN SOLAR PHYSICS RESEARCH • Continuous transition of research results to operational solar forecasters at the Air Force’s 55th SWXS in Colorado Springs and NOAA’s Space Environment Center in Boulder • Joint funding of the National Solar Observatory with the NSF • Key player in the multi-agency National Space Weather Program (DoD, DOE, NASA, NOAA, NSF, et al.) • Positioned to leverage NASA’s “Living With a Star” initiative
WHY DOES THE AIR FORCE CARE? The Sun controls the flow of mass, momentum, and energy throughout geospace. It drives all geomagnetic disturbances and space weather. By monitoring and forecasting variable solar activity, the Air Force will have the necessary input for the solar-terrestrial models that are needed to manage DoD operations in the space environment. Research Areas of Interest to AFOSR: • Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) & solar flares • Solar cycle variability • Structure and dynamics of the solar corona • Magnetohydrodynamic modeling • Structure and dynamics of the solar interior • Solar particle fluxes & cosmic rays • Magnetic helicity and reconnection • Precursors of solar activity
AFOSR FUNDING IN SOLAR PHYSICS IS ABOUT $2.5M/YR • Characterizing the Large-Scale Solar Corona, Catholic University of America • Investigating the Precursors and Initiation of CMEs, Montana State University • Flare Forecasts Using Vector Magnetic Fields, Colorado Research Associates • Solar Forecasting With Magnetic Field Chirality, Helio Research at NOAA SEC • Ionospheric Response to Solar Disturbances, University of Alabama at Huntsville • Solar Magnetograph With IR Fabry-Perot Filter, Big Bear Solar Observatory • MHD Modeling with the CCMC at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center • Heliospheric Structure and the Solar Mass Ejection Imager, UCSD and NSO • Solar Adaptive Optics and Solar Observations at Sacramento Peak, NSO • Observations & Theory of Solar-Terrestrial Interactions, AFRL/VS at Hanscom AFB • (RED indicates a new initiative started in the last Fiscal Year)
