  5. “One if by land, two if by sea” • Colonists were stockpiling weapons • British were determined to find them • Paul Revere warned the Minutemen • “Shot heard around the world” started the war

  6. 2nd Continental Congress • Met for the first time in Philadelphia on May 10, 1775. The delegates chose John Hancock from Mass. to become president of the Congress.

  7. Congress began to govern the colonies. It • Authorized the printing of money. • Set up a post office with Benjamin Franklin in charge. • Established a Continental Army and unanimously chose George Washington as its commander.

  8. Wrote the Olive Branch Petition and sent it to King George III. In the petition (formal request), the Congress asked for peace and for the king to protect the colonists’ rights. King George III refused the Olive Branch Petition and prepared for war by hiring more than 30,000 German soldiers called Hessians to fight along side British soldiers in America.
