  9. Strategy: Group Summarizing • Summarizing requires readers to distinguish between key concepts and subordinate ideas. • Summarizing requires students to condense information. • Group Summarizing requires students to explain what they have learned through a summary.

  10. Steps in Group Summarizing • Record the title of the selection. • Students survey the text passage and identify major topics (categories). These topics provide the students with a purpose for reading. • Divide the writing area into parts and label the sections based on the major topics. • Have the students read the selection.

  11. Steps in Group Summarizing • The teacher asks the students to identify information for the specific categories. • As a class, develop summaries from the recorded information. The summaries are written in the appropriate sections of the chart. • Class discussion and teacher modeling are key parts of the process.
