Current Exchange Process • Few participants in NCHS VRX program • Primarily paper copies, abstracts and line lists are exchanged • Exchange and use rules are difficult to follow and enforce • Slows the availability of a complete data set for analysis and reporting • Will not support timely birth/death matching once required by Intel Reform

  3. What’s Needed • Trading Partners willing to trade information and follow each other’s rules • Data use and exchange rules • Automated way to apply and enforce the rules of 57 jurisdictions (and other trading partners) • Secure pipeline for message transmission • Efficient way to make sure everything is working

  5. STEVE Is On The Job 24/7 • Knows when you have “mail” to be picked up and processed • Sorts, separates and replicates the information according to your rules • Figures out each destination and what’s going in each package • Seals each package securely • Labels packages and sends them out

On The Receiving End • STEVE knows when “you’ve got mail!” • Opens each package • Separates and sorts the information • Let’s you decide if other programs you already share data with can have their own mailbox • If so, delivers their mail, too --- or let’s you deliver it • Puts them in your outbox for pickup

  11. It’s Not Really That Simple NAPHSIS will hold special orientation and training sessions at the 2008 regional meetings to inform you in detail about how STEVE will work and when it will be ready to deploy in your jurisdiction.

How You Will Use STEVE • Exchange records with other jurisdictions • Birth/death crossmatch • Complete statistical data files • Transfer reportable data to NCHS • Exchange coded data files with NCHS • Exchange records with Canadian provinces and other trading partners • Re-distribute exchanged data to other programs and agencies in your jurisdiction
