  7. Search Engines A web search engine is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. Search results are presented in a list of results called “hits”.
  8. Search Engines When you use a search engine, you can only get to a certain amount of websites. Spiders and robots go out and index every single word. When you get 1 million hits it is because of the spiders and robots. Google follows links – so if there are no links, it will not find your site.
  9. What is in a URL? Each website has its own unique address – Uniform Resource Locator – URL Part before the colon describes the access method (protocol) http:// means it’s a World Wide Web server www = World Wide Web page Domains =type of organization sponsor Org – nonprofit Edu – educational Gov – government Com - commercial
  10. Reliability Just because it’s on the Web, doesn’t mean it’s true. Be sure to check who creates the information on the site. Notice how often it is updated.

  13. Search Strategy Plan your search – browsing is a HUGE time waster! Be specific on your searches. Don’t jump around – be methodical – keep track of keywords. Determine the best search engine and use it.

  42. Invisible or Deep Web What is it? The Invisible Web is that portion of the Web that is not reached by standard search engines such as Google. It is estimated to be 2-500 times bigger than the visible web. In includes specialized searchable databases (e.g. article databases, library catalogs), search engines, archives of documents, directories and locators, dictionaries and gated resources that require a password.
