Information, please…. • We offer: • A Master’s in Curriculum with a K-12 Reading Certificate • A program that is offered on the Hayward Campus • An advisor just for the program • A program that caters to the full-time teacher • Classes that use hybrid and online formats • A “cohort feel” for the core courses • Courses for the Certificate in 3 quarters
Tell me more…. • Master’s is 45 quarter units • Can receive the MS degree and the Reading Certificate as part of one program • Can transfer 10 quarter units from your credential program • Program must be completed in 7 years • State issues Certificate after 3 years successful teaching. Students get MS degree in Curriculum, but specialize in Reading/Language Arts
How is that configured? • M.S. in Education, Option in Curriculum : • With a K-12 READING CERTIFICATE • Configured as follows: • 10 units from an accredited credential program • 12 Units of Core Courses • 23 Units of Reading Certificate Classes • 45 units total
What are the required courses to obtain the Reading Certificate? TED 6210: Foundations-Fall (3 units) TED 6230: Fluency-Fall (4 units) TED 6220: Diversity-Winter (3 units) TED 6231: Assessment-Winter (4 units) TED 6232: Diagnostic Strategies-Spring (3 units) TED 6251: Field Experience-Spring (3 units) TED 6253: Comprehension-Spring (3 units) *23 Units Total
Which are the required 12 unit core courses? Must be taken in the following order: • TED 6700: Advanced Educational Psychology (4 ) • TED 6020: Advanced Research (4) • TED 6901: Graduate Synthesis (4) • *12 Units Total
Frequently asked questions…. • Do I have to take the GRE? • Do I have to write a thesis? • Do I have to take a certain amount of units each quarter? • Do I have to get special permission all classes? • To all of these questions, we say, • NO!
What are the prerequisites? • Minimum g.p.a. of 3.0 or better in all upper division and post-baccalaureate degree work • Hold a valid teaching credential and/or • Show evidence of successful classroom teaching • Have met the University Writing Skills requirement • 3 Letters of Recommendation • Write a statement of goals • Pay a $55.00 fee to the graduate school
But wait. . . • Because you are already in a CSU East Bay Credential program, we will WAIVE most of the aforementioned requirements including the $55.00 fee if you apply within 2 quarters of the credential program!
How do I apply? • Complete 2 simple forms: • University Change of Graduate Objective Form • Department of Teacher Education Application
That’s It? • Yes, just fill out the 2 forms and you will be considered for the Master’s degree for up to two quarters after you receive the credential.
