Know Academic Requirements • Most 4-year college/universities will have some sort of minimum coursework that needs to be completed by graduation. • Minimum mathematics: usually including multiple levels of algebra, geometry, possibly trigonometry/pre-calculus • Minimum History/Social Science and English • Minimum Science • These minimums are generally in the three to four year range. • These requirements should coincide with high school graduation requirements. • Colleges look very favorably upon honors courses, AP courses, and overloading

  3. SAT/ACT Take as many times as possible. Colleges accept the highest score. Take both - Report the higher score in application. Use help resources. Enroll in preparatory classes if possible. Take practice tests a few days before the actual test.

  4. Extracurricular activities Colleges look favorably upon INVOLVED students. Athletic activities are GOOD. Join clubs/programs/societies. Seek out LEADERSHIP POSITIONS. Seek internships during the summer. Seek any kind of foreign travel or study abroad experience

  5. The Resume This resume should be tailored to college application. This is different from a job application resume This is a short 1-2 page summary of accomplishments, abilities, and interests Items should be listed in chronological order Be detailed, but do not include totally irrelevant things. The resume is supposed to allow colleges to get a better view of you and what you’ll add to their program

  6. Building the Resume • Sections to include • Heading • Academic Profile (high school(s) and dates attended) • Athletics • Extracurricular Activities • Work and Volunteer Experience • Summer Programs • Honors/Awards • Hobbies/ Interests/ Foreign Experience

  7. Recommendations • Build relationships • Find a mentor in your school/club/sport • Engage your mentor • It’s not too late to start this process now • Ask early for recommendations • Use recommendation sources that can reflect different aspects of you.
