Small group activity • Think about a college administrator who you always go to on your campus for help (besides your professors)… • Think of a position on your college campus that you would enjoy doing as a full-time job… • Name 2-3 activities you enjoy doing, aside from your classes and/or academic experience…

4. What is nufp? • The NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program is a semi-structured mentoring programfor undergraduate students wishing to explore and better understand the field of student affairs and/or higher education. Students and mentors apply as a pair, and if selected are provided the foundation to establish a semi-structured mentoring relationship at their institution.

Nufp learning outcomes • Writing, research, and presentation skills • Ethical decision making skills • Cultural competency skills • Professional networking skills • Identify and develop personal, academic, and career goals • Awareness and understanding of engaged citizenship and service • An understanding about multiple relationships to power and privilege • Develop an understanding of the history, mission, and purpose of student affairs and the various institutional types and structures within higher education; and • Understanding of NASPA's organization and structure.

Program components • On Campus Mentorship • The “heart” of the NUFP experience • Engage fellows in intentional, reflective experiences both on & off campus; assist with development both personal & professional goals • Provide reflective outlet regarding the profession • Often the biggest predictor in whether someone will pursue a career in student affairs/higher education • NASPA Regional & Annual Conference Programming • Regional Conference Events for NUFP Fellows • NUFP/Student Affairs Leaders of Tomorrow (SALT) Pre-Conference

Program components • Summer Internship Program • Gain insight into the field through a 6-8 week, campus-based experience at a campus other than their own.  • Host institutions offer a $1,500 minimum stipend, as well as help coordinate the intern's room and board. • Gwen Dungy Leadership Institute • Held annually on various university campuses • Offers 30 Fellows the opportunity to network with peers from other institutions, and institute faculty who represent the scope of NASPA’s membership • Not only provides an in-depth leadership development experience, but it also prepares Fellows for graduate work in student affairs/higher education

13. What others say about nufp • The overall NUFP experience “For me it was being able to finally have a purpose in life and find a direction that I actually was happy with. Before, I was just thinking of what I thought was the best thing for me, but actually experiencing the conference, experiencing my interaction with all these people [at the SLI] and I knew this is where I belong. The NUFP program sort of gave me that avenue to be able to explore this so called ‘natural ability’ that I had for helping students and being concerned about students. So I think in that aspect the NUFP program was a positive influence.”

14. Next steps: are you interested? • To be considered for admission to the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program, each applicant must: • Have a NASPA member agree to serve as a mentor • Have the support of their institution's Senior Student Affairs Officer • Identify as a member of a historically disenfranchised student population (i.e. Black/African American, Asian, Hispanic/Latino(a), Indigenous (Native American, Alaskan, Hawaiian), Multiethnic, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, or as having a disability) • Have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application (Applicants with a 2.7 cumulative GPA will receive preference in the review process)
