  1. USING PUNCTUATION EMPLOYMENT MATCH UK

  2. GUIDANCE • PLEASE READ THE SLIDES CAREFULLY AND TAKE YOUR TIME. • HAVE A PEN AND PAPER READY TO COMPLETE THE ON SCREEN ACTIVITIES • DONT!... SKIP DORWARD TO THE ANSWER SLIDES.. YOUR ONLY KIDDING YOURSELF. EMPLOYMENTMATCH UK

  3. THE APOSTROPHE The apostrophe only has two uses : • To indicate possession or belonging • To show where letters have been omitted YOU SHOULD NEVER USE IT WHERE A WORD IS SIMPLY PLURAL. If you didn’t understand some of the terms on this page use an online dictionary. IF YOU ARE HAPPY CONTINUE ON TO THE NEXT SLIDE.

  4. EXAMPLES • THE GIRL’S COAT- THIS SHOWS POSESSION THE GIRL OWNS THE COAT • THE GIRLS’ COAT- THE APOSTROPHE GOES AFTER CAUSE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A GROUP OF GIRLS. • I’M COLD- THIS IS WHERE A LETTER HAS BEEN OMITTED. WITHOUT THE APOSTROPHE THIS WOULD BE “I AM” • Exception rule: It’s with and apostrophe is only ever used for “it is” or “it has” never use this for possession or belonging. For eg, this is wrong: “the spider lost it’s leg” CONTINUE TO THE NEXT SLIDE

  5. Have a go at fixing these sentences the answers will be confirmed on the next slide • The girls coat was purchased from dunnes stores. • The cat hurt its paw • The dog wouldnt go into its kennel. • The boys though it would be funny to wear all the girls coats.

  6. Answers • The girl’s coat was purchased from Dunne’s store. (Possession or belonging) • The cat hurt its paw (This is correct remember the exception rule) • The dog wouldn’t go into its kennel.(omitted letter and the exception rule) • The boys’ though it would be funny to wear all the girls’ coats.(apostrophe is on the outside as we are referring to more than one!)

  7. The Comma • Used to : • Separate items in a list • When completing sentences are joined together with a connecting word (conjunction) such as, but, so and although. • It is also used before speech marks are used for eg, the man said,”bla”. • It is also used in a sentence to separate words in a sentence that do not need to be included.

  8. Examples • My favourite chocolate bars are Flake, Caramel, Twix and Galaxy. (Separating in a list) • Nestle chocolate is good, but Cadbury’s is even better. (joined together with connecting word) • The girl said, “That’s my chocolate”. (before speech marks) • The boy, who already had lots of his own, gave his sister’s chocolate back. (separating words in a sentence that do not need to be included)

  9. Semi collon • The semi colon (;) is only ever used to break a sentence when the two parts are closely linked. • For eg, I enjoy all types of chocolate; I like Cadbury’s the best. • Can you see how the above are linked closely ?
