Problems of Volcanoes • Kills many people. • In the year 320 a large volcano eruption forced most people to flee el Salvador. • Frequent earthquakes.
Izalco Volcano • “Lighthouse of the pacific.” • Glowing top could be seen far out at sea. • Erupted from 1770 until 1958 (188 years).
San Salvador Volcano • Boquerón: central large crater. • Picacho: high peak northeast of crater. • Jabali: mountain northwest of crater.
When the eruption happened • Rainy season of July or August • Early evening • Men had returned from work • During dinner time • Found half empty bowls • Before sleep.
What They Found • Household gardens, Corn fields, Orchards • Foods: Corn, beans, squash, chili peppers, avocados, nuts, cherries and other fruits. • Drank cacao. • Grew cotton for clothes and cooking oil. • They ate deer, ducks, turkeys and dogs.
Santa Ana Volcano • Tallest of El Salvador's volcanoes. • Towers 2365 meters (over 7,000 ft.) above sea level. • First eruption was in 1520. • Has erupted 12 times. • Last time was in 1920.
Chaparrastique Volcano • Aka San Miguel • Most active • Erupted 29 times since 1699.
San Vicente Volcano Nahuatl language = Chichontepec
