  2. Terminology: dictators & oppressors What is a dictatorship? A dictatorship is when a state is ruled by someone with unrestricted authority. Dictators very often use the military to impose their regime. People who try to express their ideas either in speech, writing or actions are arrested, imprisoned, punished and possibly killed in order to silence them.

Context • Context BBC News June 1998 :Abacha dies at 54 • Not My Business by NiyiOsundare Nigeria's military strongman, General SaniAbacha, died at the age of 54 after reportedly suffering a heart attack. • Nigeria under Abacha: • The general seized power in 1993 after cancelling presidential elections. • He steadily consolidated his grip on power, with purges of the army and restrictions on political activity. • After the execution in 1995 of nine opposition activists, including KenSaro-Wiwa, and with the presumed winner of the 1993 elections, Chief MoshoodAbiola, still in jail, Nigeria was suspended from the Commonwealth and became diplomatically isolated.

  6. Born in 1947 in Ikere-Ekiti, Ondo State of Nigeria, NiyiOsundare studied at Ibadan, Leeds and Toronto universities, and now teaches in the Department of English, University of Ibadan. His poems have won many national and international prizes, among which was the 1986 Commonwealth Poetry Prize. He also writes articles for Nigerian newspapers. Osundare says his main aim is to make poetry accessible to ordinary people. He writes a lot about social issues and events in Africa. The poem is most likely set in Nigeria. The poet, NiyiOsundare, used his poetry to object to the cruel dictatorship that ruled his country. ‘Not my Business – Niyi Osundere’
