What is Pertussis? • Pertussis is also known as the whooping cough. Pertussis is a disease that affects the air passages and breathing. Pertussis is very contagious!
What can Pertussis do to you? • Pertussis can make you have severe coughing spasms, In between these coughing spasms the child gasps for breath, the child will usually vomit after these spasms. Pertussis can also lead to arguments like haemorrhage, convulsions, pneumonia, coma, inflammation of the brain, permanent brain damage and long term lung damage.
What causes Pertussis? • Pertussis is caused by a bacteria found in the mouth and throat called the Bordetella pertussis.
Who does Pertussis affect? • Although Pertussis is highly contagious it mainly affects babies under 12 months of age but anyone can still catch it.1 in every 200 children under 6 months old will die from Pertussis!
Can you catch Pertussis? • You can catch Pertussis from an infected person by their cough and sneeze. Family members are the main source of infection for the babies
Getting Immunized • At 4 months old it’s a good idea to get the Pertussis needle. The recommended Pertussis vaccine is called DTap.
