MECHANICAL PROPERTIES • Determines how a material will react when it is subjected to one (or more) mechanical constraints. • Examples of properties: • hardness • elasticity • resilience • ductility • malleability • tensile strength
HARDNESS Resists penetration (making a hole in it) Reacts to pressure by elastic deformation
ELASTICITY Regains initial shape Reacts to force by elastic deformation
RESILIENCE Resists physical impacts Reacts to temporary force by elastic deformation.
DUCTILITY Stretches without breaking Reacts to tension by plastic deformation. ex: Stretching to make a wire.
MALLEABILITY Flattens or bends without breaking Reacts to bending or compression by plastic deformation. ex: Making metal sheets.
TENSILE STRENGTH Resists tension without becoming permanently deformed Reacts to tension by elastic deformation
1. Identify the mechanical property referred to by each statement. a) Thanks to this property, it is difficult to drill holes in certain metals. ____________________________ b) I help materials to regain their shape after being bent. ____________________________ c) I provide materials with physical impact resistance. ____________________________ d) I help materials to react with elastic deformation when subjected to tension. ____________________________ e) Thanks to this property, a material stretches without rupturing. _____________________________ f) I help materials to become flattened into sheets without breaking. _____________________________

Technical Analysis of your phone/ iPod • Place your phone/ iPod on the desk (if you don’t have one use your partner’s) • Perform a technical analysis of your phone by answering the following questions on your sheet • What materials are used in your phone? • What mechanical constraints is your phone subject to? • Has your phone undergone any deformations? • Does your phone have any special features?
