  2. Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005)

  3. Background • Who: • Britain, India • The East India Company, The Sepoys. • Key Characters: • Mangal Pandey • William Gordon • What you need to know about them: • Mangal Pandey is a soldier (Sepoy) for the East India company who who saves the life of his British commanding officer, William Gordon. Gordon is indebted to Mangal and a strong friendship develops between them, transcending both rank and race. Observe these characters carefully!

  4. Background • What: We see the introduction of a new rifle, the Enfield Rifled Musket. Rumors began to spread among the Sepoys that the cartridges(which had to be bitten) were greased with either pig fat or beef tallow- an abhorrent concept to Muslim and Hindu soldiers, respectively. These rumors were built onto already existing fears that the British had plans to convert all the Sepoys to Christianity. The truth of these rumors has never been established.

  5. Background • Where: India, especially Calcutta. • When: 1857

  6. Background • Bollywood: • Is the informal term popularly used for Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry in India. Bollywood is one of the largest film producers in the world, producing more than 1,000 films a year. • Bollywood films have heavy musical elements and often seem to be overacted to Western viewers. Today, practice your CQ by trying to appreciate the film on its own merits, not by Western standards. • Bonus: Bollywood actresses are HOT.

  7. Scenes & Bonus • Scene One: The Ball (4 min) • Scene Two: “The Free Market” (2 min) • Scene Three: The Cartridge Factory (2 min) • Scene Four: The Face Off (4 min) • Scene Five: The Final Battle (10 min) • Scene Six: Epilogue (2 min) As you watch, pay careful attention to all the people depicted in the film!! Bonus: If we move quickly, we will watch a classic Bollywood scene just for fun.

  8. Final Questions • Who does the director want you to think is more enlightened: the Mangal Pandey or Gordon? The British or the Indians? What evidence do you have for your opinion? • Do you think The Rising is equally biased, less biased or more biased than Khartoum and 55 Days At Peking? • What is the Indian response to the White Man’s Burden? Do you support their actions? • What would you do if you were in Gordon’s shoes? Mangal Pandey’s? Please explain.
