  2. What is it? • A new Nevada State Law (SB391) • Goal of the law: Ensure young children get the reading skills they need to be successful. • Stronger partnerships with families • Understand your child’s reading progress and ask questions • Supports teachers with specialized training

  3. Will this law affect my child? • Applies to all children, Kindergarten through 3rd grade • Retention provision applies to current Kindergarten students (2016-2017)

  4. What does it mean for my child? • If NOT on track, then = extra reading help provided by the school • -We need your partnership and support reading outside of the classroom.

  5. What does it mean for my child? There are certain exemptions that may allow a student to advance to 4th grade.

  6. How will I know if my child is on track in reading? • Results will be shared beginning in the winter and throughout the year.

  7. How can I help my child? • Ask your child’s teacher how you can help. • Find resources to support learning outside of the classroom. • Attend a school event on literacy or Parent U class. • Know your child’s progress.
