City of Minneapolis Employment and Training Program Presented by Marie Larson, Industry Relations Manager

RENEW Green Homes North RENEW- Green Homes North will engage Minneapolis residents in industry-driven job training programs, ensuring a well-prepared and certified labor pool. Through this process, METP will establish best practices for interns and contractors receiving instruction in Minnesota Green Communities building criteria, as well as other key site-based and/or participant-specific certifications. Training options include green residential construction and building systems maintenance. • The City of Minneapolis Employment and Training Program (METP) will provide free training, site-based internships and job placement services through RENEW- Green Homes North, delivering high-quality workforce development focused on green construction skills.
RENEW Green Homes North Target region Demographics African Americans Candidates have some work experience in construction • North Minneapolis Focus: geographies in which poverty rates range from 19-42% • RFP for Green Homes North development
Training Project Partners • Original to the grant application: • Project for Pride in Living (business partner) • Dunwoody College of Technology • Minneapolis Community and Technical College • Minnesota Resource Center (a division of RESOURCE, Inc.) • Employment Action Center (a division of RESOURCE, Inc.) • City of Minneapolis Community Planning and Economic Development – Housing Development and Policy team • Partners added through approved modification: • EMERGE Community Development • Sherman Associates (business partner)
RENEW Green Homes North • Deliverables: • Train and credential 30 participants • Support internship experiences on-location with business partners • Place 24 trainees in jobs • Of the 24 employed, at least 20 will be placed in training-related employment

RENEW Green Homes North • The City of Minneapolis has identified four goals for Green Homes North: • Build 100 green homes in North Minneapolis • Increase energy efficiency and sustainability • Create job opportunities for local residents and minority and women-owned businesses • Promote Minneapolis businesses providing green housing products
Green Homes North Design Review Committee • Each of the proposals was reviewed by the design review committee to encourage the highest quality and most innovative green energy efficient homes. • Members: • CPED Housing Director • CPED Planning staff • Architect • North Minneapolis neighborhood representative • The design review committee will continue to provide feedback on specific designs and encourage innovative green design.

Construction to Minnesota Green Communities Standards • Green, energy efficient and sustainable materials that may be used include: • SmartSide (an engineered, environmental friendly wood siding) • Anderson double or triple glazed windows • Low VOC paints • Green label carpets, recycled carpeting • Dual flush toilets • WaterSense labeled products • Continuously active ventilation systems • Whole house air exchanger systems • ENERGY STAR appliances • Compact fluorescent light bulbs • Concrete that has a 40% fly ash content, Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) foundations • 95% efficient power vented furnaces and power vented water heaters • Programmable thermostats and water heaters • Recycling 65% of construction waste from job sites • Planting trees • Landscaping and surface storm water management and water reuse
