Project Components • Goals • Increase workers’ skills to the level needed to find employment • Provide workers the skills needed for Twin Cities greening manufacturing base demands
Project Components • Training • 120 hours of welding training conducted by St. Paul College instructors; or • 64 hours of medical device training conducted by Anoka-Ramsey Community College instructors; and • 48 hours of GreenPOWER training conducted by BGAF green manufacturing specialist instructors • 10 hours of OSHA training conducted by authorized OSHA instructors • 11 hours of job search and resume writing training • Above training enables graduates to obtain certification for: • SME Green Manufacturing Specialist • OSHA 10 • American Welding Certificate • Medical Device Essentials Certificate • Advanced Medical Device Certificate
Project Components • Outcomes • Train 18 Minnesotans with 85% training retention rate in welding program (one class) • Train 24 Minnesotans with 85% training retention rate in medical device class (two classes) • Train 15 veterans in GreenPOWER and additional training through the County services • All participant graduates will receive certificates or credentials from SME and/or OSHA • 90% of participants will retain jobs after six months of employment
Welding Project Results To Date • Welding class completed May 2012 with 16 participants • 10 participants placed in training related positions
Medical Device Project Results To Date • First class completed June 2012 with 11 participants • Six participants placed in training related positions • Second class began September 2012 with 13 participants

Trades Academy to Apprenticeship Pathway • Trades Academy “Boot Camp” • Round 3 project that is expansion of Round 2 Trades Academy in partnership with SMNJATC • 20 hour Trades Academy is safety focused with graduates obtaining OSHA-10 certification. • Discussion about progress on Round 2 project led to opportunity to address pipeline issue in construction • Construction hit hard by recent economy but very large projects are under way in our area • Electrical union apprenticeship intake and process
Trades Academy to Apprenticeship Pathway • Three goals to the project: • 50 Silver level National Career Readiness Credentials • 30 Trades Academy graduates looking for employment in related industries. • 20 new apprentice electricians through “Boot Camp”. • Workforce Center counselors able to make appropriate referrals for Credit for Prior Learning.
Trades Academy to Apprenticeship Pathway • Boot Camp includes: • 40 hours using standardized NJATC Electrical Apprenticeship curriculum • Safety, basic electrical theory, tools and materials of the electrical trades including conduit bending • Prepare a new worker for productivity on an electrical job site
Trades Academy to Apprenticeship Pathway • First session – April • 10 started, 8 completed • All worked as Electrician Helpers • Second session – begins September 27th • Trades Academy sessions continue • NCRC silver level - minimum qualification • CAEL training scheduled October 24th • To target construction workers, veterans in emerging occupations
Trades Academy to Apprenticeship Pathway • Unanticipated Results • Presentation to entire Rochester Construction Partnership • Helpers hired this summer • CAEL training will impact long after the grant ends • Stronger employer relationships created with the OJT’s in our toolbox
