Principles For Using The Scriptures • GOSPEL – Source of Authority (Heb. 1:2, 2:1-4; Matt. 17:5; Jn. 1:17; Rom. 1:16-17) • GOD’S COMMANDS– Forms the Pattern(Heb. 8:5, Ex. 25-31; Heb. 2:8-16; Matt. 19:9, Rom. 10:12-13) • ALL OF GOD’S WORD – The Whole Counsel of God(Heb. 5:5ff, Psm. 2, 110; Acts 2:38, Rom. 10:13-14, Acts 22:16) • ATTITUDE – Respect God’s Silence(Heb. 1:5, 13; 7:12-14, 8:4)
“Silence” – Permissive? Order a hot dog with onions and mustard, and you get a hot dog with all that you ordered but also sauerkraut. Why? You did not say not to add sauerkraut… “Fire not commanded”(Lev. 10:1-2, 16:12) Carry ark by cart – “not according to Ordinance”(I Chron. 15:13-15, Ex. 25:14) Instrumental Music? (Eph. 5:19, Col. 3:16)
Avenues For Authority • EXPRESSED COMMAND (Heb. 7:5) • APPROVED EXAMPLE: • To Avoid (Heb. 3:18-19, 4:1,11) • To Imitate (Heb. 11:4, 12:1-2, 13:7) • NECESSARY INFERENCE (Heb. 4:7-12, Psm. 95:7; Heb. 9:16, 10:1-2)
LORD’S SUPPER • Must I partake? COMMAND – ‘This DO in remembrance of Me’ (I Cor. 11:23-24) • When? APPROVED EXAMPLE – “Upon THE FIRST DAY of the week WHEN we were gathered together to break bread” (Acts 20:7) • Every Week? NECESSARY INFERENCE – Which week does not have a first day? (Cf. Ex. 20:8)
SCRIPTURAL APPEAL • Appeal to the GOSPEL as our source! • See the PATTERN, interpret terms first LITERALLY, seek the WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD; and respect GOD’S SILENCE. • Make sure to establish belief and practice in the proper three avenues: COMMAND or PRECEPT, APPROVED EXAMPLE, or NECESSARY INFERENCE.
