  2. Summary • Belgium has significantly higher number of teens among the age group of 14-18 (88%). It is followed by Denmark and Greece. • Children in Denmark are the most active users of social networking sites with the aggregate of 88% who post photos of themselves or their friends as well as personal information on the internet. Followed by Netherlands with a total of 86% users. • Users mostly allow only friends & family to have access to one’s social networking page indicating the user’s concern for safety. Very few people allow all internet users to have access. • Most parents in Denmark (78%) & Netherlands (75%) do nothing to control internet usage at home. • 40% of parents in Finland know a great deal about the internet which is significantly higher than the rest of the market. • 59% of parents are confident that their children are maintaining the safety precautions while sharing information on the internet in the entire Pan-European region.

  6. Age Belgium has significantly higher number of teens among the age group of 14-18 (88%). It is followed by Denmark and Greece. Spain has the highest number of children under 14 (41%). 1 2 1 1 1 2 Q1. Which age group do you belong to?

Active use of social networking sites 1 Children in Denmark are the most active users of social networking sites with the aggregate of 88% who post photos of themselves or their friends as well as personal information on the internet. Followed by Netherlands with a total of 86% users. Greece has the highest incidence of respondents not involving in social networking sites (39%). 2 2 1 1 Q3.   10. Safety of information Nearly half of the users find it safe to share personal information or a photo , on blog or social networking site. Irish feel significantly safe (57%) than the rest of the countries. The Swiss and Greeks feel the most unsafe (31% each) while sharing personal information on the internet. 1 2 3 3 3 2 Q.   11. Contacts via social networks Users mostly allow only friends & family to have access to one’s social networking page indicating the user’s concern for safety. Very few people allow all internet users to have access. Italy has slightly higher number of respondents (73%) claiming that they have been contacted by strangers, followed closely by Ireland (71%) 1 2 1 2 2 Q. Have you ever been contacted by someone you don’t know online e.g. friendship request, Twitter follower request direct message, comment on your wall, comment on your photo, invite to an event?

  12. Contacts via social networks – Contd… 1 When contacted by strangers on the internet the top most action taken by all the countries is to respond out of curiosity except UK, Denmark & Ireland. The top action taken by UK, Denmark & Ireland is to block the comments/request. 2 1 1 2 2 2 Q. If yes, did you respond?

  13. Parental control 1 Parents across markets have a fair bit of knowledge of the internet. British, Finnish & Irish parents know more compared to other s. 28% of Parents in Greece know a great deal about the internet which is significantly higher than the other markets 18% of parents in Spain don’t know anything about the internet. 2 3 2 3 Q.  How much do your parents know about the Internet?

  17. Monitoring children Parents in Finland limit their children's time on the internet (43%). Parents in Netherlands (38%) put the computer in the living room to monitor their children’s activities. Parental control 1 59% of parents are confident that their children are maintaining the safety precautions while sharing information on the internet in the entire Pan-European region. 67% of parents in Denmark know that their child has privacy settings on the social networking sites.
