South Dakota’s Healthcare & Social Assistance Industry is projected to be our largest growth industry. • The health care industry alone is projected to need over 11,000 jobs between 2006 and 2016. • The number of high school graduates will decrease by nearly 17% between school years 2002 and 2018. • By the year 2025, the number of South Dakotans age 65 and over will double.

  3. Simply speaking, it means that as our baby boomers retire and leave the healthcare workforce they are subsequently aging, requiring additional healthcare services. • At the same time, there are fewer and fewer high school graduates available to replace them in the workforce.

  4. This year’s high school graduates won’t enter the hospital workforce as RNs with an associate degree, or as a radiology or lab tech until 2011. They won’t be working as BSRNs or lab technologists or accountants until 2013. They won’t become PTs or pharmacists until 2015 and physicians until at least 2020!

  5. Careers in Healthcare are EXCITING, REWARDING and CHALLENGING! These careers are in HIGH-DEMAND and have COMPETITIVE PAY. • These careers offer a wide variety of TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES ranging from on the job training to 12+ years of schooling after high school graduation.

  7. Week long health camps • Provides hands-on experience in a variety of health care careers • Target Juniors and Seniors • Limited to 20 students per site • Competitive application process • Offered in Mitchell, Watertown, Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Aberdeen

Middle school activities to increase interest and awareness of health careers • Forms partnerships between the school and the local healthcare facility • Two 50 minute class periods • Day One is a Mock Car Accident with students being placed in seven different departments representing 21 different health care careers • Day Two is Typhoid Mary where students investigate the spread of epidemic diseases and careers needed to address epidemics today • Aligned to South Dakota Educational Standards • There is NO CHARGE for the use of these kits! • For more information contact your local community health nurse

HEALTH IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EDUCATION • First week in February • Encourages statewide focus on health careers • Provides an opportunity for healthcare providers and educators to work together in meeting the future workforce needs of the health industry • Visit the website for free downloads of materials and ways to implement HIPE Week

Classes offered to high school students across the state • Exposure to a variety of health careers through job shadowing and classroom experience • If you don’t currently have a Health Science Program in your high school, you may be closer than you think to establishing one! Implement Virtual Health Career Fairs • Promote Health Academies • Implement HOTT Futures • Offer Health Science Classes • Incorporate Health Careers information into other classes • Meet with local healthcare workers to see how they can help • Disseminate healthcare career information to students • Visit the HOTT Website at www.sdjobs.org/sdhott for more ideas and activities! • Contact the Office of Rural Health for lesson plans and activities.
