  2. What is poverty? • Poverty is when a person or community lacks the essentials for a minimum standard of well-being and life. • People in poverty usually lack food, safe drinking water, and shelter.

  4. Unfortunately, not all of America’s poor have been so fortunate. • Since September 1996, 13.8% of Americans live in poverty. • Many more are on the borderline.

  5. Child Poverty • Poverty affects all ages, but 48% of its victims are children. • Children and families are the fastest growing group in the homeless population .

  6. Everyday2,660 children are born intopoverty. • 27 die because of it • This was a baby that was born addicted to crack because of his mother.

  7. About 15 million children ,one out of every four, live below the official poverty line.

  8. Poverty in New York City • Life for New York City children is getting worse. • 25% of New Yorkers are children. • 762,00 children live in poverty. • 181 Babies are born into poverty everyday. • 10,00 children are homeless. This number has doubled since 1988.

  9. Poverty in the U.S • Among the 21 most affluent nations, the U.S has the highest percentage of poor children. • Our rate is twice that of the country next in line. • The September 1996 welfare bill cut $60 billion in aid to poor families within a 6 year period. Sadly this has put one million more children into poverty.

  10. Prospects for their future • Too many young Americans go to bed with empty stomachs. • They also wake up with hopeless futures. Such as school problems, unemployment, welfare, gangs, drugs, and crime. • Children of poverty are more likely to suffer from young and violent deaths.

  11. Hopeful Signs • Fortunately there are some Americans who care. • Three out of every four voters agree that political leaders are not doing enough to help the people in need.

  12. There are people out there that are doing something about poverty. • In 1995, 49% of American adults were regularly doing volunteer work. All together they did a total of 2o.3 billion hours of work. • So it’s time for us to start making a change in the way that these people live.
