If you want to study CE Music, you have to: • pass Grade 5 Theory of Music from the Royal Schools of Music; • be able to play a musical instrument (any musical instrument including singing and any Chinese Musical instrument), and have passed Grade 6, or equivalent, from the Royal Schools of Music; • be interested in Music; • be interested in studying in small groups.
What are you going to study in CE Music? You have to take 3 papers:
Paper I: Practical Test (15%) Students with qualifications from the Royal Schools of Music, at Grade 4 or above may claim exemption (豁免) from this test. Marks will be awarded to such students according to the following scale, out of a maximum of 15:
Paper II: Listening test (25%) Students will be required to give brief answers to questions to 3 excerpts on Western Music and 1 excerpt on Chinese Music.
Paper III: Theory and History of Music (60%) The objectives of this part are to test students’ music literacy and their general knowledge of western music history.
What are the prospects of studying Music? • You can also study AS Level or A Level Music in S6 and S7 through the Centralized scheme of Music organized by the Education Department; • The Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Hong Kong and the Baptist University offer courses up to Doctoral degree; • Most overseas universities offer Music degree; • Most employers nowadays prefer employee to be academically and artistically capable.
