The Impossible Illusory Triangle Christopher W. Tyler Smith-Kettlewell Institute San Francisco
The Impossible Illusory Triangle Christopher W. Tyler The Kanizsa illusory triangle is a negative object defined only by its occlusion of background elements. The Penrose impossible triangle is the image of a three-dimensional structure that cannot be interpreted as a physical 3D structure, but has fluctuating inconsistent 3D interpretations. The new illusion is a combination of these two illusory effects, in which the combination of a Kanizsa triangle with a simple three-line figure generates a full Penrose figure with a continuously depth interpretation. The powerpoint presentation animates the development of the Kanizsa triangle, the transformation as the three-line figure is incorporated into it, and the lack of illusory or 3D interpretations from the three-line figure by itself. The animations require several button presses to complete.
