History (Chesney and McAnarney, 2001) • 1960 - Informally begun at APS-SPR meeting by Charles Janeway • 1961- Met at Brookhaven National Laboratories on Long Island as The Conference of Chairmen of Pediatrics in American and Canadian Medical Schools • 1962-63 - Traymore in Atlantic City and Palmer House in Chicago • 1964 - Association of Medical School Department Chairmen at Arden House, NY

  3. History (Chesney and McAnarney, 2001) • Early 1960’s - Became politically active…NICHD, Head Start • 1967- AMSPDC, Inc. • 1970’s - Two snowstorms sent AMSPDC to southern locations for annual March meetings • 1997- Association of Medical School Pediatric Chair(men)s, Inc.

Administration • President, President-Elect and Past President (each serving 2 years) • Secretary-Treasurer (serves 6 years) • Executive Committee (meets twice a year) • Officers • 8 American chairs and 1 Canadian Chair proposed by separate nominating committee (serve 3 years) • Jean Bartholomew

  5. Administration • Jean Bartholomew at the American Board of Pediatrics offices in Chapel Hill, NC (by contract with the Board) • Administrator, financial manager and site selector • More importantly: the glue, memory and conscience of AMSPDC

  6. Collaborations • Federation of Pediatric Organizations (FOPO): AMSPDC, AAP, ABP, APS, SPR, APA, APPD. Also, NICHD and NACHRI representatives attend the meetings. • Public Policy Council (with APS, SPR, and AAP, too) • Council on Pediatric Education (COPE) of the AAP • Special relationship with the ABP and AAP

  7. More Than Social • Forum for discussion of problems of national and regional interest • Forum for important liaisons with other organizations: AAP, ABP, NICHD, NACHRI and others • AMSPDC Initiatives

AMSPDC Initiatives • New Chairs meeting every 3 years (20% annual turnover), Marianne Felice • Pediatric Scientist Development Program, began 1987, Peggy Hostetter • Frontiers in Science, began 1987, Alan Schwartz • Council on Medical School Education in Pediatrics, joint meeting every 3 years, Robin Deterding

  9. AMSPDC Initiatives • Subspecialty Forum, began 2001, Dick Behrman • AMSPDC pages in the Journal of Pediatrics, began 2001, Aaron Friedman • Pediatric Education Steering Committee, began 2002, Dick Behrman • Social interactions, began with the beginning and are vital.
