  1. MANAGING SKATEBOARDS IN ARLINGTON HEIGHTS

  2. SKATEBOARDING IN ARLINGTON HEIGHTS IS NOT GREEN TRANSPORTATION, IT’S A THRILL SPORT

  3. “This run is one of the best inner city runs in the Portland area. It is about 3 miles long with 2 very fast str8-aways (40 + mph) and plenty of corners as you can see.”

  4. AS ADVERTISED ON “SKATE AND ANNOY”

  5. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS HAS LOTS OF VISITOR TRAFFIC

  6. IF THE CITY DOES NOT ACT, SOMEONE IS LIKELY TO DIE

  7. Woman dies after collision with skateboarder in Capitola July 6, 2011 CAPITOLA - A 17-year-old boy riding a skateboard downhill Tuesday hit an 83-year-old woman crossing the street. The Capitola woman later died in a San Jose hospital, authorities said.

  8. RECENT OREGON SKATEBOARD DEATHS Hillsboro, July 2011: Scotty O’Connor, 20, dies of head injuries from street longboarding Hood River, June 2011: Forest Andrews, 18, dies after skating under semi truck Redmond, July 2010: 12-yr-old boy killed after running stop and hitting SUV Tigard, June 2010: Henry Langhaim, 19, dies in fall while skating Bull Mountain Bend, June 2010: Jacob Vinson, 30, dies in fall skateboarding down steep road

  9. From “Skate City” Long Board Skating By. C.A. “When it comes down to hard core skateboarding, it's not a matter of if an accident will occur, but when it will happen. It happens to the best of them.   Broken bones and cartilage-deep body scrapes come with the territory. All of this for an adrenaline rush and a reputation as a lunatic.”

  10. SKATERS FOR PUBLIC SKATEPARKS • “When deaths involve skateboarding, it’s almost certainly out in the streets. In 2006 there were 42 skateboarder deaths in the U.S. and 40 of those were in the streets.  Of those, 32 involved a motor vehicle. The best way to prevent this tragedy from happening again is to create safe, sanctioned places for people to ride their skateboards.”

  11. SKATEBOARD PROBLEMS • Dangerous skating • Unsafe for skaters • Unsafe for neighborhood residents • Unsafe for visitors • Noise • Wheel noise • Sliding/braking noise • Yelling

  12. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS “Always hunt for the best ideas from other cities.” -- Tom Miller, 2010 Malibu, CA, 2009 Bans skateboarding on steep streets Laguna Beach, CA, 2011: Bans skateboarding on 8 city streets Newport, OR, 2011: Bans skateboarding on bayfront

  13. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS City Code § 16.10.200: • PBOT may “designate streets where certain classes of vehicles may not move on or over except for local access.” • Prohibit through skateboards in Arlington Heights

  14. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS • Portland, Maine, 2009: City installs cobblestones on one street to deter skaters.

  15. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS Rumble strips

  16. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS • Rumble strips near Zoo

  17. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS Grooves across street:

  18. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS • Continuous center line on entire “Zoobomb” route, with raised reflectors on curves.

  19. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS • More aggressive law enforcement • Running stop signs • Crossing center line • No lights at night • Mayor Adams should end the “hands off Zoobombers” policy • Fare inspection on MAX • Close Washington Park MAX station at 10 p.m.

  20. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS • City should engage with skater community to promote alternative route through Park instead of neighborhood
