  2. Silicon • Silicon to silicone • Natural element • Silvery, hard metalloid • Silicon dioxide or sand/quartz

  3. Advantages of Silicon • Most abundant resource besides oxygen • Cheap and simple to mine • Can be used for many purposes

  4. Disadvantages • Machinery used to extract from Earth • Silicon dust is toxic if inhaled causing respiratory problems

  5. Silicone • Synthetic, rubber-like polymer • Mixture of silicone, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen • Intense mixing and injected into molds • De-foamer is added

  6. Disadvantages of Silicone • Non-biodegradable • Sharp objects penetrate silicone

  7. Advantage of Silicone • Heat resistant • Very durable • Doesn’t support bacterial growth

  8. Molds • Made of cheap metal (aluminum, steel, iron) • Also made of rubber and wood • Injected silicon cools in mold • Injection taken out of mold and packaged

  9. Silicone Oven Mitts • Buy in stores or order online • Cost $10-$20 (size, shape, company, etc) • Little to no heat • Withstand temperatures from -150°F to 500°F

  10. Examples of Silicone Oven Mitts

  11. Dispose • Does not decompose • Recycled and reused
