  2. What was the NDC? • New Deal Coalition (NDC)- diverse groups dedicated to support Democratic Party • Included African Americans, White Southerners, unionized workers, and various urban groups

  3. NDC • 1933-1941, union membership grew from 3 million to more than 8 million party because of the Wagner Act • The AFL was made up of crafts such as plumbers and electricians. • AFL did not support industry wide unions such as automobile and rubber

  4. NDC • John Lewis (United Mine Workers) and Walter Reuther (Automobile Workers) formed Committee for Industrial Organization. • Signed unskilled and semiskilled laborers • Officially split from AFL in 1938 and became Congress of Industrial Organizations

  5. NDC • Sit-Down Strike- type of strike wen workers sat down at their work place so strikebreakers could not carry on production • General motors and Ford had violent strikes • On Memorial Day, 1937, police attacked strikers, women and men, were beat.

  6. NDC • Large Northern cities (New York and Chicago) had political organizations that provided services for votes • Various ethnic groups and religions supported Roosevelt because of his New Deal Labor Laws and work-relief programs
