Overview • New Horizons cruise phase observations from the MVIC instrument • Contents • Raw and reduced data • Targets: Uranus, Neptune, M6, M7, functional testing • Extensive documentation, calibration info, etc. • Comments • Less intuitive to figure out how to use the data at first compared to some PDS datasets I’ve seen • However, it is well documented and after reading documentation and looking through directories everything needed appears to be there • But it turns out to not be as clear as I thought (stay tuned)
What data are available? • [Note this is for LORRI but also applies to MVIC] • Dataset.cat details when each observation occurred • Where do I find these? • “Start UTC: 2007-279” • But I don’t know easily what day 279 is? • “Start SCLK: 1/0053937714” • From aareadme.txt I know the data directories have dates and SCLK numbers Bingo!
Using the data • Which specific image(s) in that directory? • Look in document/seq_lorri_plutocruise.tab • LOR","07267:A1LR038_01_KBO2005FY9 ","2007-10-06T00:49:57","1/0053937714:27334","Cruise science on KBO target • But…there’s no image with “0053937714” in the file name: • However, there are some with lor_00539377* • Open them and look at headers to confirm they are what I’m looking for
Using the data • Color images of Neptune sound interesting (document/seq_mvic_plutocruise.tab) • What am I looking at? • Catalog/mvic.cat tells me there are 5024x32 arrays in five filters (panchromatic, blue, red, NIR, CH4) • But this array is 5024x629, so what am I looking at? • Is this a composite of all five filters? • After looking at the header I think its just one filter, but it’s confusing • Are the extra lines due to scanning?
Using the data • Looking through various files in catalog/ and document/ I don’t see anything that obviously explains these images • There is a ton of documentation of *how* the instrument works, but not much on how to actually use the data • Explanations of FITS header keywords would be useful • Also, where is Uranus?
Using the data • Now looking at M7 • This looks like a star field (yay)! • From header: SCANTYPE=FRAMING, EXPTIME=1 • What is this? • From header: SCANTYPE=TDI, EXPTIME=2.9 • As someone without any previous experience: how do I find more information to help me interpret this?
Using the data • Now that I look at raw and reduced I’m really confused about what this is? raw reduced
Review • Data are well documented, but could be easier to navigate • Would be useful to list the filters acquired for a given target • Or make an actual observing log that lists every image, not just sets • Would be useful to give pixel positions of specific targets when possible • Despite quite a bit of effort I can’t find sufficient documentation on how to use/interpret these data • There should be something that clearly explains the images since it does not appear to be straightforward (hopefully I just overlooked something?) • document/nh_ralph_v100_ti.txt • Line 161: 13 references that do not appear to be archived anywhere and not necessarily retrievable: • Why is this document written in the future tense?
Review (continued) • Listed in dataset.cat but not in data/ • Minor typos given to Ludmilla

Overview • New Horizons cruise phase observations from the LORRI instrument • Contents • Raw and reduced data • Targets: Neptune, Jupiter, KBOs, star fields • Extensive documentation, calibration info, etc. • Comments (similar as for MVIC) • Less intuitive to figure out how to use the data at first compared to some PDS datasets I’ve seen • However, it is well documented and after reading documentation and looking through directories everything needed appears to be there • This time I can make sense of images!
What data are available? • Dataset.cat details when each observation occurred • Where do I find these? • “Start UTC: 2007-279” • But I don’t know easily what day 279 is? • “Start SCLK: 1/0053937714” • From aareadme.txt I know the data directories have dates and SCLK numbers Bingo!
Using the data • Which specific image(s) in that directory? • Look in document/seq_lorri_plutocruise.tab • LOR","07267:A1LR038_01_KBO2005FY9 ","2007-10-06T00:49:57","1/0053937714:27334","Cruise science on KBO target • But…there’s no image with “0053937714” in the file name: • However, there are some with lor_00539377* • Open them and look at headers to confirm they are what I’m looking for
Using the data • Once images are found, which is the target? • Nothing moves when blinking images • This is the Makemake field, so maybe it’s too faint? • Next step (I guess): compare to a star chart • Is the position given some where? • Presumably the team knows where it is so this shouldn’t be difficult
Review • Data are well documented but could be easier to navigate • A more complete log than seq_lorri_plutocruise.tab would be useful (e.g. list all images for a given target, not just sets) • The sequence list should use YYYYMMDD instead of YYYY-DOY to be consistent with layout of data/ • Would be useful to give pixel positions of specific targets when possible • Document/nh_lorri_v100_ti.txt (similar to MVIC) • Lists 10 references that do not appear to be archived anywhere and not necessarily retrievable, e.g. “10. Response to LORRI OpNav action items, forwarded in an e-mail from Howard Taylor on 12/21/2006” • Why is this document written in the future tense?
Review • These are listed in dataset.cat but don’t seem to be in data/ • A few typos given to Ludmilla
