Social Media Revolution • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIFYPQjYhv8&feature=fvst
Difference Between: • New Media: • Interactive digital media, such as the Internet, as opposed to traditional media such as print and television. • Social Networking: • The practice by which internet users build relationships and bookmark important sites with like minded people.
Issues faced in this new Contemporary Media Practice • The loss of authority seen in the movement away from ‘traditional media’ • The new authority seen in creators of popular social networking mediums i.e. Google (1st), MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Flicker…. • Is there a loss of authority/ultimate truth – or has it morphed into a new ‘face’?
Consequences of unresolved Media Issues • Challenges faced to maintain authority and therefore civility in society when there is a breakdown in power • E.g. Lord Of The Flies scenario • Personality: Erik Qualman • http://socialnomics.net/ • Idea: if we capitalize on new media/social networking = controlled environment.
THESIS QUESTION: • How to recognize the new authority that has no face? • Turn it into another business? (i.e. Qualman) • Will containment only lead to conflict (i.e. censorship/“black list”)? • Do we allow a natural progression? (i.e. free speech/ blogging/personal judgment) • OTHER?
