  1. Public Speaking—All I Know • Rule 0: Have something to say. • Rule 00: Speak to inform,not to impress. • If you really inform, that will impress.

  2. 1. Speech Organization • 1.1. Make your outline clear to your hearers — at opening, at every major heading, at close. • Tell 'em what you're gonna tell 'em. • Tell 'em. • Tell 'em what you done told 'em.

  3. Order • 1.2 ZOOM. Start rather far out, for clear context. • 1.3 Show the driving problem that motivates the work. • “Why” is the key to “what”. • 1.4 Construct your argument first, then gather evidence, illustrations.

  4. 1.5 Illustrate with audio-visuals, examples. • Construct audio-visuals next, text last. • 1.6 Three major points is about all people can take up. (?)

  5. 1.7 Pitch level too low rather than too high. • 1.8 Use low key, relevant, self-depreciating humor. • Avoid canned jokes.

  6. 2.0 Speech Technique • 2.1 Tools unique to speech: • volume, • pitch, • tempo, • rhythm. • Use them. • Craft them. • VARY them.

  7. Notes vs. Text? • 2.2 Read vs Memorize vs Notes (foils are great!) • Try it once • Try it once • Novices: • • Mark volume Write out, discard, and • • Mark pitch speak from notes. • • Mark tempo • Others: on manuscript Prepare notes, • soak in speech, • craft openings, closes.
