  1. Blueberry

  2. Mystique of growing Blueberries Last month I was able to visit my friend Joel who is an organic blueberry farmer. Joel is a farmer and a garden consultant. While the plans look like some leafless bushes during the winter they have been properly pruned and cared for during the past 15 years.

  3. To properly prune a blueberry plan the weak wood has to be removed. The weak wood is thin and looks like twigs. They can take energy from the healthy parts of the plan. You also need to remove some of the older wood. The wood ranges between three to five years old and is a grey color. This wood is often found on the trunk. This will help the plant renew itself in the spring.

  4. Pruning a blueberry plant can be tricky to get used to at first. By nature the plant is rather messy looking and knarrled. This is not a plant for those that like tidy looking trees and bushes.

  5. Growing organic fruit is not easy and the farmer works hard. There are no sprays used on the plants so weeding them alone is a hard task. The plants are fed twice and year. One organic feeding is done in the spring and the other in the fall. Liquid seaweed and fish emulsion are used to fed the plants. Organic growing allows micro organisms to build up in the soil. This will break down compost and feed the plants naturally. No chemicals or fertilizers are used. This will allow the plants to grow and provide a fresh taste.

  6. If you are looking to grow organic blueberries Joel has some of his plants up for sale. You are now able to buy blueberry plants online. The blueberry plant is often hard to start and many of these plants are only available to commercial growers. This plant nursery already has the blueberry plants started. Joel recommends teasing the roots and planting them at an almost horizontal angle. They should be planted on small mounds so they have the best chance of taking root and producing delicious blueberries.
