Agatha asked a question; to which the stranger only replied by pronouncing, in a sweet accent, the name of Felix.” (Shelley 99) [The monster’s thoughts] Summary: Safie comes to the cottage, and as she learns the cottagers’ language the monster does as well. But with this, he learns how alone and isolated. “While I improved in speech, I also learned the science of letters, as it was taught to the stranger; and this opened before me a wide field for wonder and delight” (Shelley 101) [The monster’s thought] “But where were my friends and relations? No father had watched my infant days, no mother had blessed me with smiles and caresses; or if they had, all my past life was now a blot, a blind vacancy in which I distinguished nothing. From my earliest remembrance I had been as I then as in height and proportion. Felix's role in the escape was discovered, and the family lost its wealth and was exiled by the government. When Safie's father tried to force her to return to Turkey, she escaped, not wanting to be constrained by Islam's oppressive stance on women, and came to find Felix

Chapter 16 • Themonster saves a little girl from downing. • The man with the little girl thinks the monster is trying to hurt the girl, so he shoots the creature. • The monster makes his way back to Geneva and runs into William Frankenstein. • William acts just as Victor did towards the monster, so the monster decides to stagle him with his bare hands. • William has a picture of his mother. The monster takes the picture and gives it to a nearby sleeping girl. • That girl is Justine • The monster finds Victor and asks him to make the monster a female mate

Ch. 18 Summary • Victor decides to go off to England to work on his project. • Victor’s father thinks Victor is upset, and he thinks it is because he doesn’t want to marry Elizabeth anymore. • Victor begins to make the female monster. • He then begins to have doubts, so he destroys it and decides not to make it anymore. • He is afraid that the monster will mate with the female and make more monsters.

Ch. 20 Summary • Victor changes his mind about creating the female and destroys her. The monster sees him destroy her. He visits Victor and vows to see him on his wedding night. The creature promises to destroy Victor’s happiness. Victor goes on a boat to dispose of the female’s body. He falls asleep and ends up in Ireland. He is taken into custody as a murder suspect.

Chapter 21 • Summary: At Mr. Kirwin's office, Victor learns that a man in his mid-twenties was found dead on the shore with black marks on his neck. And various witnesses testify that a boat much like Victor's was seen at sea. Victor is taken to see the body. It is Henry. Victor falls into convulsions, and remains bedridden and delusional for two months. • “As the images that floated before me became more distinct, I grew feverish; a darkness pressed around me: no one was near me who soothed me with the gentle voice of love; no dear hand supported me.” • “My father, who was watching over me, perceiving my relentlessness, awoke me; the dashing waves were around: the cloudy sky above; the fiend was not here: a sense of security, a feeling that a truce was established between the present hour and the irresistible, disastrous future, imparted to me a kind of calm forgetfulness, of which the human mind is by its structure peculiarly susceptible.
Chapter 22 • Victor stops in Paris to rest. • He gets a letter from Elizabeth asking if he still loves her. • He decides that he is going to marry Elizabeth in ten days, despite what he thinks the monster is going to do. • Back in Geneva, Victor tells Elizabeth that he has a terrible secret, but he can’t tell her until after the wedding. • After the wedding, the happy couple goes to their honeymoon in a cottage in the middle of nowehere.
