Good Afternoon! • Have out your Science books, journals, and pen or pencil. • Make sure your analysis is out and complete from Act. 81 #1-5 pg. E-40
Agenda • Review analysis Act. 81 • Objective • Set up Journal Act. 82 • Introduce Activity 82 • Activity 82
Analysis #3 • Draw the diagram from the book • What is missing? Net Force 10 N-Net Force
Analysis #4 • Part A was balanced, the block was not moving.
Analysis #5 • A- 0 Net force- parked • B- there is a net force since it started to move • C- 0 Net force moving steadily • D- 20 Net force- unbalanced • E- Net Force-unbalanced
Exit Slip • Answer Challenge Question with complete sentences • Act. 81- 3/17/14 • How can you tell if the forces of an object are balanced or unbalanced?
Objective • Students will be able to measure the braking distance of carts by releasing them onto a track with a high friction surface.
Activity 82:Braking Distance • Date: 3/17/14 • Challenge Question: • Getting Started: What is braking distance?
What is braking distance? • F- time and distance to stop fully • D- distance when the car is braking/stopping • C- the distance where you stop at • A-how far a car goes when it stops • B- when the brakes stop • E-the distance the car travels when it hits the brakes • G-same as D
What is braking distance? • E-read from book • F-distance it takes an object to stop • G-how far you go in your car after you push the brakes • A-distance that the car travels when the driver hits the brakes and comes to a complete stop • B-the distance the car stops • C-distance between when the driver pulls the brakes from the when the car stops • D-the distance the car travels when the brakes are hit
Braking Distance • B-when driving, move after the driver applies it • A-the distance traveled when you hit the brake • C-the distance with brakes • F-when the distance stops • E-how far the car goes after pressing the brakes • D-the distance of stopping a vehicle • G-how far the distance an object takes before it fully stops
Build Background: Braking Distance • The distance a vehicle travels in the time between the moment the brakes are applied and the moment when the vehicle comes to a stop. • The vehicle’s brakes cause the car to stop by increasing the friction.
Introduction pg. E-41 • Challenge Question: How can friction lower the risk of getting into an accident?
Act. 82Materials/Procedure pg. E-42 • Copy data table from pg. E-42 into your journal • Read steps #2-9
Prediction: Think about • When you cover the track with the cloth, will cart’s braking distance become longer or shorter?
Activity • Complete steps #2-9 from the procedure pg. E-43 • Write down your results in your data table • Make sure your average is calculated. • Put your materials away when you are finished.
Variables • Please complete each variable • Independent: notches (release height) • Dependent: braking distance • Control: look at data & decide which one will you compare your data to. (Notch A) • Answer: When you covered the track with the cloth, did the cart’s braking distance become longer or shorter?
Exit Slip • Act. 82 • 3/17/14 • Answer challenge question with complete sentences • Analysis #1-3 pg. E-44
Exit Slip Homework • Make sure your data table is complete. • Make sure your average is calculated. Answer challenge Question Act. 82 • Analysis Questions pg. E-44 #1-3 • Extra Credit due by Friday 3/21/14 • Analysis #4-Reflection Pg. E-44
