Objectives • Introduce overview of SEC mission • Review the past history of the Monmouth University program and its success • Discuss current SEC higher education initiatives during BRAC transition • Look toward the future goals of educating our workforce
The Past: SEC and the Monmouth U program Program: Masters of Science in Software Engineering Program, 1986-2010, Monmouth University, West Long Branch, New Jersey Purpose: Served as a means to attract qualified talent to continuously revitalize the Engineering and Scientific workforce within the Software Engineering Center. End Result: As of May 2010, will have graduated 362 Army Interns, 70% of which are still working for the Federal Government. Program Requirements: • Combined mastery of the SE discipline and advanced studies. • Techniques for delivering software on time and within budget • 30 credit Masters curriculum (15 core, 15 specialized track) • Six credit Practicum with emphasis on large, hands-on software development projects. Management Oversight: Software Engineering Center and Monmouth University used a centralized approach with senior leadership exchanges, management and intern sensing sessions, feedback from MU administrators and feedback from SEC supervisors and managers. Summary: Processes were in place to ensure that the program met the needs of SEC in maintaining a quality Engineer and Scientist workforce then and for the future in support of the War Fighter.
The Present: SEC Higher Education initiatives in a BRAC climate Goalis to develop relationships with several local colleges and universities, taking advantage of the many rich educational opportunities available to our current and prospective employees, enabling SEC to meet future mission requirements SEC Initiatives during BRAC transition: • Summer/Fall 2009-SEC partnered with Towson University, UMBC and University of Delaware to recruit Masters SCEPS, currently have 18 employees in this program, scheduled to graduate this year, converting to FT intern positions NLT Fall 2010 • Winter 2009-SEC joined Mike Lombardi of RDECOM to meet with representatives from Bowie State University to discuss their new Information Assurance (I/A) program and how it can meet the needs of our workforce • Winter 2010-discussed I/A program options with Johns Hopkins University • Winter 2010-discusssed Acquisition course options with Cecil College • Winter 2010-communicated with University of MD College Park committed to inform them of Intern opportunities at SEC
The Present: SEC Higher Education initiatives in a BRAC climate SECInitiatives during BRAC transition cont.: • Spring 2010-SEC attends a curriculum development meeting at Harford Community College to offer insight as to our IT skills needs and recommendations for their curriculum changes • Spring 2010-Participation in Junior Science Humanities Symposium at Morgan State University • Spring 2010-Partner with UDEL to bring a federal resume writing workshop to the students at their career center, asked to be a member of Employer Advisory Board • Graduate final class at Monmouth U in June 2010 • Planning stages for Intern class of Fall 2010-centralized training program formerly through Monmouth U. No longer only Software Engineering, working to address all skill set requirements to support the SEC Mission. Will utilize multiple local colleges and universities to educate the SEC Workforce in several disciplines.
The Future: SEC and Education Needs at APG • Contribute to APG’s consolidated approach to higher education outreach • Educate and familiarize the workforce with information on degree programs and courses offered in the local area that meet SEC Mission requirements. • Partner with other APG tenants to bring courses to the installation • Provide employees with a variety of options to pursue courses and degrees in Information Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Assurance and Business disciplines to meet mission needs • Pursue non-credit training in order to provide employees with opportunities to gain required Continuous Learning Points (CLPs) • Continue to educate our workforce so that we are better able to serve the War Fighter
SEC is committed to the Future and our Education Needs at APG • Currently Funding $500K per year in educational needs for SEC • Needed career fields: Information Technology Software Engineering Computer Science Information Assurance Business disciplines • Interested in capitalizing on the rich educational environment in the surrounding MD/DE area and broadening our educational programs supported to better fit the SEC of tomorrow. • SEC will continue to educate on emerging technologies to better serve the War Fighter
