  1. A Guide to Making the Best Personal Decisions

  2. To make the best, healthiest decisions we must put thought into the matter at hand. It is a process. Some decisions are easier to make than others but all require a degree of time & consideration. Life is the sum of all your choices. ~Albert Camus

  3. I B E A R DECISION MAKING First Step- IDENTIFYthe decision to be made. What situation are you in? EX) You were planning to stay afterschool for extra help in math but your friends just told you they are going to the movies. Next- BRAINSTORM possible choices. What are the different ways you can deal with the problem or situation? EX) 1. Skip going to extra help and see movie with friends. 2. Stick to plan, go to extra help and suggest hanging out over the weekend.

  4. I B E A R DECISION MAKING After Brainstorming comes EVALUATING the possible outcomes. This is where you list/give thought to the positive and negative results of each option/choice. **All decisions have some level of risk & taking risks is an important part of the learning process; however, some things are more risky than others, & it’s important to think about the possible dangers before acting.**

  5. I B E A R DECISION MAKING • EVALUATE • OPTION #1. Skip going to extra help and see movie with friends. • (+) Have fun with friends & relax watching a movie • (-) Risk doing poorly on test, movie might not be good. • OPTION #2. Stick to plan, go to extra help and suggest hanging out over the weekend. • (+) Feel confident about test the next day, still get to make plans with friends for the weekend. • (-) Don’t get to spend time with friends.

  6. VALUES When making any decision it is important & helpful to remember & consider your VALUES before making a decision. A VALUE is something that is of worth to you, it is significant, carries meaning, something you respect and can’t imagine being without. Values can be morals/ principles, people, & items. It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are. ~Roy Disney

  7. I B E A R DECISION MAKING ACT- Decide what you will do and take action. But first, a few more questions to ask yourself prior to acting are: -Is this decision good for my health? - Is this decision safe? Could I or someone else end up hurt? - Is this decision legal? - Would my parents/family approve? **If you can answer yes to these, then go for it! If not, then why bother???**

  8. I B E A R DECISION MAKING What Choice will you make??? Go to movies Stay for extra help An original, realistic option you came up with The person sitting next to you may have made a different choice, why?

  9. I B E A R DECISION MAKING The last step is to RE-EVALUATE your choice. Reflect on the experience you had as a result of your choice? Are you happy with the outcome? Would you make the same choice next time?

  10. In Summary… the best choices are made when we pause to think about our options, the possible outcomes of those options, and before deciding, considering our values, making sure our decision goes along with what we believe in/ what matters to us.
