  2. About NACLO and IOL What are linguistics Olympiads? Linguistics Olympiads are contests for high school students that exercise skills in logical and analytical thinking using linguistic data. Puzzles are self-contained and require no prior knowledge of languages or linguistics. History of the IOL There have been eight IOL contests since 2003 in Bulgaria (2003, 2008), Russia (2004, 2007), The Netherlands (2005), Estonia (2006), Poland (2009), and Sweden (2010). In 2010 twenty six teams from eighteen countries participated. Countries that have participated at least once are Countries Australia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, India, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, UK, and USA. IOL 2011 Will be held in the US IOL 2011 will be held on July 24-30 at Carnegie Mellon University. As the host country, we provide room and board for one team and one coach from each country. Expenses will be around $60,000. History of NACLO NACLO has been held at universities and high schools in the US and Canada every year since 2007. Over 1000 high school students compete each year. The US has sent two teams to the contest each year and is one of the top prize-winning countries. NACLO organizers NACLO is run by volunteers, university employees whose time has been generously donated by their departments, and paid students. Over 100 people have contributed their time in some way to NACLO. The primary organizers are: Lori Levin (co-Chair), DragomirRadev (Program Chair and Head Coach), James Pustejovsky (Sponsorship Chair), Amy Troyani (School Liaison), Mary Jo Bensasi (Administration), Patrick Littell (Coach), and Adam Hesterberg (Coach). NACLO funding NACLO has received support from the National Science Foundation, Google, other companies and departments, and individual donors. Expenses are about $25,000 per year to take two teams to the international contest. Additional money is required for training camps and administration. Contact: naclo11org@umich.edu
